Axion AXN-8701 Handheld LCD TV Review

I purchased the Axion AXN-8701 from Amazon.com in November (2009) in hopes of watching other football games while tailgating with my friends at the Arizona Cardinals stadium.  Though I’ve only had this handheld digital tv for a couple of months, it has proven quite useful.  The 7-inch “widescreen” LCD display is big enough to identify football players on the field, yet small enough to make this handheld TV truely mobile.  Lets look at what came in the box first.

7-Inch widescreen LCD portable handheld TV
Built-in NTSC/ATSC tuner for both analog and digital channels
Built-in antenna allows for easy repositioning for better reception
A/V input for external audio/video sources
Includes AC adaptor, instruction manual, remote control, external antenna, car adapter, and A/V cables

First off, I’m really happy with the design and quality of the AXN-8701.  The button layout and ease of use to scan for new channels is nothing short of perfection.  Really.  The last thing I want to deal with on a new TV is having to read the instruction manual before I can use it and the AXN-8701 has such an inutitive user interface, that I was watching digital television 5 minutes after I took it out of the box.

The Good:  The rechargeable Li-polymer battery offers up to 2.5-hours which can easily be recharged with the AC adaptor included with this unit.  I was able to watch a whole football game on one charge.

The Bad:  My only complaint is the small antenna that comes attached to this TV.  I had to purchase a Terk Technology HDTVi antenna to pick up most stations tat I wanted to watch.

The Final Verdict:  One of the better picks for handheld and portable DTVs on the market.  If you live in a large city, you probably will be able to utilize the small antenna that comes with this unit.  If not, I’d recommend purchasing a set of rabbit ears antenna (not amplified) or the Terk Technology HDTVi antenna.
