Expired DTV Coupons – What to do?

We receive numerous questions about DTV and HDTV on a daily basis from consumers, and by far the most popular question is

Can I renew my expired DTV coupon?

The short answer is, no.

But there are a couple of options for folks who had their $40 government coupon expire or didn’t request one before the July 30th, 2009 deadline.

Our first recommendation would be to use . We’re seeing a trend where used converter boxes are selling for between $15 to $25. Though you are not able to use a DTV coupon to purchase a DTV and HDTV converter box from a seller at eBay, you can pick one up for a discounted price comparible to what they sold for new minus the $40 discount. WARNING: Please consider a seller’s feedback before purchasing anything on eBay. You can do this by clicking the small number next to the seller’s name (which represents how many items they’ve sold) and seeing the amount of positive and negative feedback on previous transactions they’ve participated in.

Our second recommendation would be to use the website craigslist. Craigslist is a website similar to eBay in the fact that transactions occur between private parties. Again, please be warned to check the feedback of the seller that you’re interested in buying from.

Most transactions that occur both on eBay and Craigslist go well without a problem but there are instances where a seller does not deliver on a sale. For that reason, eBay has a resolution center that does help protect you as a buyer including a full refund for the original purchase plus shipping costs.
